I have to open by taking something away from you, and I would rather do it on the first page than spring it on you later. You have probably read a list of eldest daughter traits and felt seen to the point of tears. Hyper-responsible. Cannot relax. Carries everyone. Parentified. And the list was accurate, and the relief was real, and I am not going to mock any of that, because being handed a name for your life after decades without one is not a small thing. But the explanation attached to that list is not true. Birth order does not shape personality. This is not my opinion and it is not a contrarian flourish; it is one of the more decisively settled questions in personality research, tested on hundreds of thousands of people across three countries.
