Why this book exists
A focused place to understand what is happening
Every Christmas Eve, Magnus writes a message to his sister and does not send it. He is forty-nine. He has been doing this for eleven years. The message is never long and never the same, and he has never kept one. He writes it in the evening, after the others have gone to bed, on his phone, in the kitchen. Sometimes it takes four minutes. Once, in 2019, it took most of an hour and ran to six paragraphs and he deleted it at ten past one and went to bed and did not sleep. The next morning he is fine. That is the part to notice. He does the presents and the lunch and the walk, and if you asked about his sister he would say, evenly, that they do not speak, that it has been a long time, that these things happen. Ask him what his relationship with her is.
The writing is designed to reduce shame, bring the underlying pattern into view and give you practical ways to respond without pretending that every life follows the same formula.
