Why this book exists
A focused place to understand what is happening
Enid is fifty-three and has not seen a doctor in four years. She has a shoulder that has hurt since before the pandemic, a cough that comes back every winter, and a family history she knows she ought to mention to somebody. She has not made an appointment because she has a reasonable expectation of what will happen, based on the previous eleven appointments she made about entirely different things: that she will be weighed, that her weight will be raised, and that whatever she came in about will be understood as a consequence of it. She has been told to lose weight for a sore throat. This book is about that. It is not a book about weight. It contains no diet, no eating plan, no exercise programme, and no opinion whatsoever about what you should.
The writing is designed to reduce shame, bring the underlying pattern into view and give you practical ways to respond without pretending that every life follows the same formula.
