There is a paper from 1984 whose title is also its finding, and it is the best title in psychology: determinants of student self-concept, is it better to be a relatively large fish in a small pond even if you don't learn to swim as well. Here is what Herbert Marsh and John Parker established. Take students of equal ability. Measured, matched, equal. Put some in a high-ability school and some in a low-ability school. Then ask how good they think they are. The ones in the high-ability school rate themselves lower. Same ability. Different pond. Different answer.
