Why this book exists
A focused place to understand what is happening
She read it in the car park, because she could not wait the eleven minutes to get home. Four pages, mostly administrative, and one sentence on the second page. She read that sentence about nine times. And then she cried in a way that frightened her, because it was not the crying of someone who has had bad news and it was not the crying of someone who has had good news, and she could not tell you now which it was. Here is what nobody had prepared her for. Her future was identical at quarter past three to what it had been at five past. Nothing in the letter changed what she would do on Thursday. But every year since 1988 had just been re-explained, all at once, in about ninety seconds. The tutor who wrote that she did not apply herself. Her mother.
The writing is designed to reduce shame, bring the underlying pattern into view and give you practical ways to respond without pretending that every life follows the same formula.
