A focused place to understand what is happening
There is a particular sound that a certain kind of woman can no longer bear, and it is a notification. Not a specific one. Any of them. The small noise a telephone makes in a quiet room. I have sat with a number of people over the years who found something on a phone at one in the morning, and they are not all women and it is not always gambling, but the shape is always the same and the sound is always the same, and every one of them has told me the same thing about the hours afterwards. They did not investigate the person who did it.
The writing is designed to reduce shame, bring the underlying pattern into view and give you practical ways to respond without pretending that every life follows the same formula.
