Casimir is fifty-one, he lives outside Derby, and he has a job. That is the first thing he told me, defensively, in the first four minutes, before I had asked anything. He has learned that it is the thing which disqualifies him from complaining. He was made redundant in March 2023 from a logistics firm where he had worked for nineteen years. It was not personal. It was a restructure and there were forty of them, and he said one phrase to me twice in that first session: I understood the business case. He was out for nine months. He is now a fleet manager somewhere else, twenty minutes further away, on about four thousand pounds less, and he has been there eighteen months.
