Why this book exists

A focused place to understand what is happening

There is a guitar in his loft and it has been there for nineteen years. It is a good one. He bought it at thirty-one, deliberately, in a shop, after an hour of trying several. He was not a guitarist and never had been. That was the point: he had wanted to be since he was fifteen, and the purchase was the beginning of the thing finally happening. He played it for about four months. Then his daughter was born, and then there was a period at work, and then it moved to the spare room, and at some point nobody recorded, somebody put it in the loft. He is fifty-two. Once or twice a year, in the small hours, he thinks about it, and what he feels is out of all proportion to a musical instrument.

The writing is designed to reduce shame, bring the underlying pattern into view and give you practical ways to respond without pretending that every life follows the same formula.
