Why this book exists
A focused place to understand what is happening
Rosamund is sixty-one, she is a retired school administrator, she lives outside Preston, and on Tuesday she was searched. She had queued for fifty minutes. She had put her keys, her phone, her purse and her coat into a locker, because you cannot take them in. She had been photographed. She had held out her arms while a woman she had never met ran hands over her body, and then she had stood still while a dog walked past her, and then she had sat at a table fixed to the floor and been permitted to embrace her son at the beginning and at the end and not in between. Then she drove home for two hours and made a cup of tea and did not tell anybody about any of it. Her son is thirty-four. He is four years into a long sentence for something serious.
The writing is designed to reduce shame, bring the underlying pattern into view and give you practical ways to respond without pretending that every life follows the same formula.
