Why this book exists
A focused place to understand what is happening
Talia is a structural engineer and she is very good and she has been passed over three times. She is forty-one. She designs the parts of buildings that hold the rest of the building up, which is a job in which being wrong is not an abstraction, and in nineteen years she has not been wrong. When something on site goes badly, it is Talia who gets rung, including by people who have been promoted over her. She does not put herself forward. That is the accepted account of her, and it is said kindly, in appraisals, by people who like her. Talia needs to be more visible. Talia should back herself more. Talia is her own worst enemy. She has been told some version of this for a decade and she agrees with it.
The writing is designed to reduce shame, bring the underlying pattern into view and give you practical ways to respond without pretending that every life follows the same formula.
