Why this book exists
A focused place to understand what is happening
In 2006 some researchers put people in a scanner and made them wait for an electric shock. They were not interested in the shock. They were interested in the waiting. And then, separately, they offered a choice: more pain sooner, or less pain later. Some people chose more voltage. Not a confused few. A distinguishable group, whom the researchers called extreme dreaders, who looked at an objectively worse deal and took it, because the waiting was intolerable enough that additional electricity was a fair price to end it. And when the researchers looked at what was happening during the wait itself, when nothing at all was being done to anybody's skin, the regions of the brain that process pain were becoming more active in exactly those people.
The writing is designed to reduce shame, bring the underlying pattern into view and give you practical ways to respond without pretending that every life follows the same formula.
