Why this book exists
A focused place to understand what is happening
Sonia has checked the front door eight times, and she is going to check it a ninth. She knows, with the part of her mind that still speaks plainly, that the door is locked; she locked it, she heard the bolt, she tried the handle and it held. But knowing is not the same as feeling certain, and the feeling of certainty, the settled sense that it is done and she can walk away, will not come. Instead there is the thought, quiet and relentless: what if it is not really locked, what if you only think you checked, what if someone gets in tonight because of you. And so she goes back, for the ninth time, and tries the handle, and feels the brief, thin relief that lasts about as long as it takes to reach the car, where the thought begins again, softly, from.
The writing is designed to reduce shame, bring the underlying pattern into view and give you practical ways to respond without pretending that every life follows the same formula.
